Ever Wonder Why Noah Got Drunk?

And Noah began a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.
Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent.
(Genesis 9:20-21)

Many ask, “If Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations, and walked walked with God, then why did he get drunk?”  My best answer is I do not believe Noah set out to get drunk. After all, nothing about him before that time leads us to believe he was one to get drunk. The only thing Noah did wrong, was he did not understand how the world worked since God changed things.

You must understand that before the flood there was a canopy of water keeping the UV rays from reaching men in full strength. Now fast forward to after the flood, and we know the canopy from around the World was removed, because that is one of the places the water to flood the world came. The other was the deeps were opened up allowing the water to come up from below. These two incidents created the flood. Now after the flood, with the loss of the water canopy, the destructive UV rays began hitting the world at a much larger intensity. Thus everything started decaying at a faster rate, including humans who would age quicker.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month,
on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
(Genesis 7:11)

The faster rate of composting increased, which means vegetables and fruits now rot away much faster. This is an important factor, because rot is just a simpler term for fermentation. This is the process where substances break down into a simpler substances. Things like yeast and bacteria play a role in the fermentation process. This process creates large amounts of sugar which is the basis for alcohol. If you want to keep healthy, try to avoid the alcohol sugars. These are what make wine and beer.

Which brings me back to Noah and his wine. With a quicker fermentation, the grape juice Noah thought he was drinking, turned out to have a higher content of alcohol. What he was used to drinking was probably closer to the grape juice we are used to.  Maybe a bit stronger, but not much. So what Noah ended up making was in fact a juice that had a much higher percent of alcohol than he realized. Thus he was taken by surprise when the fermentation process turned the supposedly grape juice into strong wine.

I give Noah a break, after all, how would he know about the effect that the missing water canopy would have on his wine? He would not, because his heart was pure and this is why God chose him. Thus the rest is history.

Excellent commentary & answered a question I actually had not thought about. But, it really is a good question since Noah had been deemed the last/only righteous man on earth worthy of surviving. Why DID he do something that was so out of character? Your answer is logical & makes perfect sense. I think I need to read more of your thoughts/explanations.

      Thanks for your comment Jeanette.

Sorry it took so long to reply, but personal problems have kept me from checking my site. I haven’t even posted anything new over a Month. As to your point, this is why I did the commentary. For many years the idea that Noah wanted to get drunk has never set well with me. Yet I continue to hear preachers say Noah went through a lot, so he deserved to get drunk.
